Figuring out how many cubic yards of material you need is a breeze with this simple formula:

For example: If the front of my house was 55’ long, and I wanted the front flowerbed to be 4’ away from the house, I would put:

Then, depending on what material you’re working with… you calculate how thick you want the material once it’s spread. Most of the time, we aim for 3-4 inches. So if I were to decide to lay 4 inches of rock in that same example area, I’d put:

Which then means I'd need: 2.71 Cubic Yards.
